The Swan 42's completed one more race that most of the other classes and he still managed to finish with the best score of any competitor in the entire fleet. "On two days of races the winds were very shifty - 40 degrees was the norm - the crew changed gears which was a tremendous advantage", he noted. "My tactician, Kevin Morgan is outstanding. I have been sailing with him since he was 17 years old and he made great calls in light up and down conditions". "Barleycorn" finishes up the fall season with Greenport Ocean Race for The Brooklyn Ocean Challenge Cup, an overnight race from Greenport, Long Island around Block Island, followed by the Whitebread XVI Race.....LINK 19 September 2009 NEW YORK YACHT CLUB WINS INAUGURAL INVITATIONAL CUPSee Race Results.....LINK 18 September 2009 NYYC, CANADA & JAPAN TOP THE LEADER BOARD AT INVITATIONAL CUPConfined to the Bay once again, the Race Committee was able to execute four races again today with stiff breezes expected to continue through tomorrow. Individual winners today were Craig Healy for St. Francis Yacht Club (USA) in "Interlodge" in Race 6, Phil Lotz for the NYYC (USA) in "Arethusa" in Race 7, Michael Cotter for Royal St. George's Yacht Club (IRL) in "Bandit" in Race 8, and Achim Griese for Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (GER) in "Orbit" for Race 9. A press conference followed the races and Phil Lotz was asked about consistency in the regatta which was his trip to success at the US Nationals. Lotz stated there were lots of good sailors at this event and the results here are as close as they were in Nationals. "It is superb the way the teams have caught on to sailing the Swan 42", he commented. When asked about sailing with his family, wife Wendy and sons Doug and Chris, he noted the Swan 42 is the third family boat project. Lotz did note that his downfall today in Race 10 was catching a lobster pot three minutes before the start. When asked if he would do the regatta again his answer was an emphatic, "Yes, but I would get going on a crew a lot earlier in the season since it took until mid-summer to know we actually qualified". He added "We are impressed with everyone out there on the race course and excited to race with Ken (Read) aboard". At the end of three days of races, the NYYC is in first place with 39 points, Canada is in second place with 52 points, and Japan is in third place with 56 points. As all sailors know, anything can happen tomorrow. Tonight's venue features a traditional lobster dinner under the tent at the water's edge. Instructions have been provided to the teams on how to tackle the infamous New England lobster. The Royal Cork Yacht Club (IRL) was a double winner today with "Blazer" taking bullets in both Race 2 and Race 3. Race 4 was won by "Daring" from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (CAN) with Terry McLaughlin at the helm. "Celeritas" sailed by The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (NZL) was the winner in Race 5. After the first two days of racing, "Arethusa" skippered by owner/driver Phil Lotz representing the New York Yacht Club (USA) is in first place, followed closely by "Daring" and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (CAN), and "Blazer" sailed by Anthony O'Leary of the Royal Cork Yacht Club (IRL). St. Francis Yacht Club (USA) skippered by Craig Healy with "Interlodge", Makoto Uematsu of the Japan Sailing Federation (JAP) skippering "Downhill Express", and Nylandska Jactklubben (FIN), skippered by Leonardo Ferragamo in Better Than..." round out the top six placements. Nineteen teams are competing from fourteen nations. A fabulous reception under the marquee at the water's edge was provided by Nautor's Swan with a cannon salute given to each skipper as they were introduced. The 'keeper' trophy was unveiled - a crystal work art in itself bearing the engraved logo of the Invitational Cup. It seems as though local knowledge may play a part n the success of this regatta. The first race has been completed and "Daring" skippered by Terry McLaughlin took the first bullet for the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto. Terry is no stranger to the Swan 42 as he has sailed on the Swan 42 in several regattas in Newport and John Hele, owner of "Daring", is aboard as crew. The second place boat was "Arethusa" owned and skippered by Phil Lotz who won the US Nationals here in July. As part of the crew are Phil's wife, Wendy, and sons, Chris and Doug. Third place went to Royal Cork Yacht Club and "Blazer" skippered by Anthony O'Leary, and fourth to Makoto Uematsu sailing "Downhill Express" for the Japan Sailing Federation. He is very familiar with the Swan 42 as his "Esmeralda" was the winner of Key West Race Week in the introductory year. He has Team Arethusa moving in the right direction in leaps and bounds as he has skippered "Arethusa" from 5th place at the 155th NYYC Annual Regatta in mid-June to 3rd place at Block Island Race Week in late June to 1st place at U.S. Nationals. Lotz says his win here at Nationals, his first Nationals win ever, has been the culmination of a lot of work over the years, and particularly since the 2008 NYYC Annual Regatta which was won by "Arethusa". "We have sailed with essentially the same team since November 2008 and Key West and the islands (Caribbean) earlier this year", he stated. "We shifted gears to qualify for the NYYC Invitational Cup and added a new main trimmer and tactician after the winter. The team has worked very hard and we've had a couple of close regattas. We peaked at the right time and it all came together", he reflected. "I have a great team that was flawless for four race days including the practice races", he added. Thinking ahead to the team for the NYYC Invitataional Cup, Lotz was quick to say his wife, Wendy, and son, Doug, regular members of the crew will be part of the team in September. He noted the team was very excited about the possibility of trying to qualify for the one NYYC spot at the Invitational and several crew members made sacrifices by withdrawing from the team in order to make it possible to qualify given the NYYC membership stipulations. He said those who left the team have been very supportive of his endeavour. Stan Schreyer is slated to continue on as tactician, Peter Benedetto as bowman, with Scott Bihl and Brendan Marshall in the mix. Congratulations to you, Phil, and Team Arethusa. The Class is very proud of you and we look forward to following your success in the future. July 19, 2009 PHIL LOTZ AND "TEAM ARETHUSA" BIG WINNERS AT U.S. NATIONALSThey never won a first place in ten races, but Phil Lotz of New Canaan, CT had the recipe for success winning the 2009 Swan 42 U.S. Nationals title on consistency. His worst race was an eight place - a noble feat with such lofty helmsmen in the fleet. Yesterday it seemed as though "Bandit" (Greenwich, CT) had it just about all wrapped up, but this is sailboat racing at its best and the final day was a nail-biter. The NYYC Race Committee took full advantage of a glorious sparkling day with a good breeze and granted three races on this final day of the U.S. Nationals. "Amelia" (Riverside, CT)had her opportunity to shine today winning both Race 8 and 9 and "Interlodge" came back to win Race 10. "Barleycorn" (Bay Shore, NY) took two seconds on the day and Tom and Cindy Hirsch's "Downhill Express" (Jamestown, RI) had a fantastic day earning a 4th and 5th. John Hele's "Daring" (Toronto, CA) captured a 3rd in Race 9, "Mark Watson's "Tiburon" (Bermuda) claimed a 5th also in Race 9. Gibb Kane and Drew Shea (Rye, NY) had to be thrilled with "MUTINY" and her 3rd in Race 10. Not only is "Arethusa" the big winner here at Nationals, but she has also earned the right to represent the NYYC at the Invitational Club this September which will be sailed in Swan 42's. Lotz will be sailing his own "Arethusa", whereas most of the participants will be assigned boats through a public drawing. Final awards will be presented on the Upper Lawn of Harbour Court later today and there will be a channce to catch up with Phil for some comments. Following the awards for U.S. Nationals, the drawing will be held for the Invitational Cup. This drawing will be videotaped for all participants and interested parties to view on the NYYC website.....LINK Top Six Finishers at 2009 U.S. Nationals: 1. "Arethusa" - Phil Lotz - 50 points2. "Daring" - John Hele - 86 pointsJuly 18, 2009 "BANDIT" WINS THE DAY WHILE GENERAL RECALLS WERE THE ORDER OF THE DAYAndy Fisher's "Bandit" is looking very solid as she adds two more bullets today to her repertoire at the U.S. Nationals. Fog engulfed the fleet forcing a postponement of the first race followed by a general recall. The 2.0 nm Race 6 was started after another delay to re-set the marks following significant wind shifts. Winds were 12-13 with gusts to 15. Sailing with his wife, Melissa, Fisher's crew includes the talented tactician, Steve Benjamin. "We were in the right place at the right time and we got lucky in the first race", Fisher recalled. "We got pinned and had to go the opposite way from what we planned and it turned out to be the right way". He added, "We had a fantastic start in the second race and the wind did what it was supposed to and the crew was perfect. Block Island Race Week was a great practice run as we don't get to do a lot of week-long events." Commodore Elwell and past Commodores Hinman and Werdiger's "Conspiracy" garnered a 2nd place finish with Alex Jackson's "Amelia" in 3rd, Gibb Kane and Drew Shea's "Mutiny" in 4th, and John Hele's "Daring" in 54h. Race 7 was plagued with yet another general recall. "Bandit" was followed by Malcolm Gefter's "Celeritas" in 2nd, Barry Sampson of Great Britain's "Long Echo" in 3rd, Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" in 4th, and "Amelia" in 5th. An informal gathering at Newport Shipyard followed race day with wine and beer and lots of camaraderie which was enjoyed by the crews. The formal daily prize-giving was held afterwards on the lawn at Harbour Court. Tomorrow is the final day of racing. Currently "Bandit" leads Nationals with "Arethusa" in 2nd, "Celeritas" in 3rd, Ken Colburn's "Apparition" in 4th and "Amelia" and "Daring" tied on equal points in 5th.....LINK July 17, 2009 NEW DAY WINNERS EMERGE ON DAY 2 AT U.S. NATIONALSNo precedent was set from today’s first race and new day winners emerged mixing things up a bit in the fleet. Race 4 on Day 2 of the U.S. Nationals featured some trouble at the start with a General Recall on the first attempt and 5 boats over on the actual start. Winds were between 6-8 knots and a 1.3 nm course. Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s “Interlodge” led the entire race and had a significant 1 minute 20 second lead when rounding the weather mark for the second time. "In light air it's rare that everything goes as planned - good boat speed and successdful strategy", noted Fragomen. "It certainly didn't in the next race", he added. Having an excellent regatta thus far, Andy Fisher’s “Bandit” finished second. It was a race where the Swan 42 Class officers had their opportunity to shine with Class President, Paul Zabetakis, and “Impetuous” finishing 3rd, with Treasurer, Gibb Kane, and Drew Shea’s “Mutiny” in 4th. Slightly decreasing winds and another 1.3 nm course was on tap for Race 5 with a clean start. Malcolm Gefter and "Celeritas", fresh from a victory at last weekend’s Sail Newport, claimed the bullet in Race 5. Gefter's take on the race, "Stick to your guns - it was a very tough, long race. It required complete focus and concentration, and we outlasted the fatigue." Chris Culver and “Blazer” were 2nd, Alex Jackson’s “Amelia” was 3rd, and Brendan Brownyard’s “Barleycorn” was 4th. Tonight 250 owners and crew attended a cocktail party on the lawn of Harbour Court where the daily awards were presented. The 2008 awards were presented to Bud Dailey and Preben Ostberg for winning the 2008 East Coast Series Championship and Malcolm Gefter and wife, Kathy Kirk, accepted the award for winning the Offshore Series Championship with "Celeritas". All crew members on each of the two winning boats were presented with awards. A sit-down dinner followed in the Harbour Court Carriage House and under the canopy.....LINK July 16, 2009 TWENTY-BOAT U.S. NATIONALS FLEET OFF TO A ROCKY START Day 1 of the U.S. Nationals at the New York Yacht Club in Newport proved to be eventful with a slew of protest flags flying following the 3-race day. 20 Swan 42’s were on the line competing in an event that promises to be a very competitive series. While Andy Fisher’s “Bandit” posted bullets in Race 1 and Race 2, the three-owner team of Norwood Davis, Tom Enright and Gary Jobson’s “Mustang” took the final bullet of the day. “Everything was working perfectly,” declared Fisher. “We had great starts, clean lanes and perfect rig tune. We made the right sail selection, and just like everyone else we had our good races and our not so good”, he added. However, if consistency is the rule, Phil Lotz’s “Arethusa” has the correct formula posting two 4ths and one 5th place finish placing her on top of the leader board. Protest hearings are still underway and a number of placements are undecided at this time.....LINK July 15, 2009 "AQUA EQUINOX" HOLDS LEAD MID-WAY THROUGH SWAN EUROPEANSWith the completion of six races, Filip Balcaen's "Aqua Equinox" is leading the Swan 42's at the Swan European Championships at the Royal Squadron in Cowes. The Swan 42's are sailing IRC in a 13-boat class that is comprised of Swan 65's, 56's, 53's, and 45's. Balcaen is in 3rd place in IRC Class A and has achieved one 1st, four 5ths, and one 6th place finish. Lennard van Oeveren's "Holmatro ING" and Peter and Olivier de Graaf's "Baraka GP" are in pursuit while looking forward to three more races. Europeans is the second to last leg of the N. European circuit. Next up is Cowes Week August 1-8.....LINK July 13, 2009 "CELERITAS" WINS COASTAL LIVING'S SAIL NEWPORT IN A TIESeven Swan 42's took advantage of Coastal Living's Sail Newport this past weekend as a warm-up for Nationals later this week. If the results here are evidence of what we can expect at Nationals, then we are in for a thriller. "The only things to say is, what great racing - when you tie for first and it is only one one point back to third - it could not have been closer", noted Malcolm Gefter enthusiastically. "Everyone had their up's and down's. The boats are so close in performance such that the slightest lapse in concentration or execution costs another place, and yet, the slightest tweak in positive performance gains a place. This is what makes this class and the competitors so exciting!", he added. "Celeritas" took three 1st'places out of seven races which gave her the win in the virtual tie with Glenn Darden and Philip Williamson's "Hoss", with Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" a mere one point behind the leaders.....LINK June 26, 2009“APPARITION”, “TSUNAMI” & “ARETHUSA” ARE 1,2, 3 AT BLOCK The bullets achieved at Block this week were widespread throughout the fleet with six boats taking at least one bullet. “Tsunami” and “Barleycorn” were the only boats to take two bullets each in the entire 8-race series. Out of 14 boats, 11 had a top three placement in at least one race out of 8 races. It is no wonder the phrase is echoed throughout, “The Swan 42 Class is so closely competitive.” The final day brought winds around 12 knots from the SW. “Barleycorn” was 1st across the line followed by John Hele’s “Daring”, and Ken Colburn’s “Apparition”. The big winner today was Colburn and his team on “Apparition”. With his 3rd place finish in this one race, this was more than enough to clinch 1st place overall in the series. Colburn’s assessment of the event, “Every member of the crew brought their 'A game'" and the team was able to deliver a terrific and consistent performance in an incredibly competitive fleet. Contrary to Jack's desires, we are going to put the instrument wand back up - at least for the next race. "Old fashioned" racing served us very well but wind information is a nice thing to have.” The drama for second and third place intensified with “Arethusa” beating “Tsunami” in the final race. However, “Tsunami’s” two first place finishes earned during the week broke the tie thus earning them 2nd place overall with “Arethusa” claiming 3rd. In the IRC division, Linc Mossop’s “The Cat Came Back” finished in 4th place overall just off the podium. This evening’s final awards will feature daily prizes for the top three boats in each class, as well as overall prizes for the top three boats overall in each class. Keith Yeoman, Nautor Swan agent, will be on hand to present the Nautor’s Swan USA East Trophy to the overall winner of the Swan 42 Class. Next up for the US fleet is Sail Newport July 10-12 which will be a tune-up for Nationals, also in Newport, July 15-19 where at least 19 Swan 42’s will compete. The Northern Europe Circuit will be at the Swan European Championships in Cowes July 11-17 and the Med Circuit will be at Copa del Rey in Palma August 1-8.....LINK June 26, 2009 "TSUNAMI" WINS SOLE RACE ON DAY 4After two postponements, light conditions prevailed on Day 4 (Thursday) and the race committee was able to execute one race in 7-9 knots (or less) in a southwesterly breeze. "Tsunami", co-owned by Bud Dailey and Preben Ostberg and a well-drilled crew led the entire race, but admitted they were challenged by both "Arethusa" and "Mustang". "We made a decision early on we wanted to go left and be at the pin and we won that spot - we were the last boat in", recounted Dailey. "Mustang" was in a very nice position and we tried to get Gary (Jobson) to tack, but ended up covering him", he noted. "On the run we were very lucky and probably overstood the mark and "Arethusa" closed a lot of the distance on us. They did a really nice job picking off "Mustang", he added. Dailey commented, "Apparition" (Ken Colburn) is sailing very smart - he's having a great series". Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" finished 2nd today and Gary Jobson and Tom Enright's "Mustang" was third. In IRC, Linc Mossop and "The Cat Came Back' took 3rd place. Currently they are sitting in 4th place in cumulative standings and are well within striking distance of the podium going into today's final race day. Block Island Race Week has one final day (today). "Apparition" remains the front-runner with 23 points, while "Tsunami", "Arethusa", "Barleycorn", "Daring", "Mustang", "Bandit", and "Mutiny' are separated by only 9 points with 6 more boats close behind - today is crucial in determining final placements.....LINK June 25, 2009 CATCHING UP WITH JEAN-LUC BOIXEL WHILE POSTPONEMENTS PLAGUE BLOCK While the Block Island fleet has not seen sun for the past five days, the trade off for clearing skies was a lack of wind. After two postponements the Race Committee made a stab to get one race in. This was an opportune time to check in with Jean-Luc Boixel, fresh from his success at Giraglia. Our newest owner in the Swan 42 Class, Boixel of France, thrilled the sailing world and particularly the Swan 42 Class with his magnificent finish in the Giraglia Distance Race a week ago. “GenApi” completed the 243-mile race in 2 days, 7 hours, 7 minutes and 10 seconds to place 1st in IRC A and 2nd place overall on corrected time. As we catch up with him he was pleased to share some thoughts about the race. “The first part of the race from St. Tropez to Giraglia was equal for all the 42’s. Once we arrived at Giraglia we saw 3 of the 42’s and the difference was about 30 minutes apart. After rounding the Giraglia Rock there were two options and we decided to take the option to the East. The conditions were really light, but the 42 is incredible in light conditions and we were able to maintain a speed around 6 knots. The watch rotation teams were very well organized and because of this we were very strong for the second part of the race. At three in the morning we decided to go straight to Portofino to catch the land breeze which held to the finish. It took us a mere 4 hours to go from Portofino to Genova! The remainder of the fleet chose to stay out and it took more time, thus we were able to stay well ahead. Our success is attributed to smart decisions, good teamwork and great organization.” Boixel himself was delighted with the win, “Personally it is something I feel very strongly about as it is my first 1st place. I appreciate the fact that I am already in the competitive loop. I am very proud of my choice of the Swan 42.”.....LINK June 24, 2009 “BETTER THAN…” AND “BLAZER” TAKE BULLETS ON DAY 3 AT BLOCK Quite the contrary to the last two days, winds were light today at 6-10 knots ESE. In the first race today, Race 5, Chuck Townsend, former Commodore of the NYYC, sailed “Blazer” to a 1st place finish with Andy Fisher’s “Bandit” in 2nd, and Brendan Brownyard with “Barleycorn” in 3rd. Commodore Townsend who has been plagued with the flu credits practicing for 1.5 hours before the race today. “It made all the difference as we worked on acceleration and speed.” He noted another difference when changing the spinnaker from the outside to the inside with a gybe. “Our goal was to get in the front of the pack with these boats being as competitive as ever. So much depends on being in the right place at the right time.” In Race 6, Gosia Rojek, the sole female owner-driver in the Swan 42 Class, skipped “Better Than…” to a 1st place finish. Gosia, who is assembling her second all-women team for the Swan 42 Nationals next month, credits her success today with focus. “It was a difficult day. Concentration is key and small adjustments are crucial.” Her son, Marcin, main trim, stated “We were the second boat off the pin at the start. There was bit of a left shift and more pressure to the left.” He added, “The most important thing was communication between the trimmers and the driver. We were third or fourth at the top mark, were passed to the right side downwind by “Blazer” and with a 10 degree shift we came to the first leeward mark in second place behind “Blazer”. We went to the left side again, covered the fleet and reached the top mark in first. “Blazer” went right while we maintained the same strategy as before and made one gybe for the finish.” A great day was had by “Blazer” who finished in 2nd, with Class President Paul Zabetakis taking 3rd. Ken Colburn’s “Apparition” took two 4th place finishes today, thus opening up her lead as the front-runner in the series. A pack of 9 boats is bunched behind separated by only 7 points so the next two days will be a key factor to determining final placements in the Swan 42 Class. In IRC, Linc Mossop’s “The Cat Came Back” posted a 4th today in her second race placing her in 5th place overall in yet another tight grouping in the IRC 40A division.....LINK June 23, 2009 ONE, TWO, THREE FOR “APPARITION” TODAY AT BLOCK Consistency is the name of the game and Ken Colburn and his team on “Apparition” are on a roll with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd today added to their 4th of yesterday. Today’s three races featured NE winds in the 8-20 knot range. “It was a good team effort all around by changing gears and adjusting to modest shifts” stated Colburn. “Since we lost our masthead wand yesterday, it was a good refresher on ‘old school’ racing.” Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s “Interlodge” was the victor in the first race of Day 2 while Ken and Ginny Colburn’s “Apparition” was second and Phil and Wendy Lotz’s “Arethusa” was third. All three of these successful owner/driver helmsmen are husband and wife sailing teams, with “Arethusa” adding son, Doug Lotz, into the family mix. Colburn’s daughter, Elizabeth, is a substitute crew member scheduled to join the crew later in the week. In the second race of the day, John Hele’s “Daring” was 1st, “Apparition” 2nd, and “Arethusa” 3rd. In the final race today it was Brendan Brownyard’s “Barleycorn” who took the bullet, Class President Paul Zabetakis’s “Impetuous” was 2nd, and “Apparition” was 3rd. Hele's take on his win, "We started by "Apparition" and finished with them as well. It was an exciting finish to end an eventful race. The boats are all so close now in speed that a small shift makes a major difference. We both caught the right shifts and still were close with "Bandit" at the finish - the best sailboat racing!" At the end of Day 2, “Apparition” is in 1st place with 10 points, “Arethusa” in 2nd with 15, and “Interlodge” in 3rd with 18 points. In IRC Linc Mossop's "The Cat Came Back" is in 3rd place with a 3rd, 5th and 2nd place today.....LINK June 22, 2009 “TSUNAMI” WINS BLOCK ISLAND DISTANCE RACE IN THRILLER 2007 and 2008 East Coast Champions, Bud Dailey and Preben Ostberg, co-owners of “Tsunami”, took the first bullet of Block Island Race Week winning the 8-mile Around Block Island Distance Race today. The Storm Trysail Race Committee took advantage of the stiff wind forecast of 20-25 knots with gusts up to 40 and 4-6 foot seas to place the distance race on the agenda for Day 1 of Race Week. "We had a poor start and were in the back of the fleet", stated Dailey and Ostberg. "Interlodge led most of the race up until the very last .5 mile. "Arethusa" was in 2nd and we broke over to split away while "Interlodge" tacked on "Arethusa". It was lighter at the SW corner with smooth water, but a huge current. We think the difference was we carried our heavy #1 and most carried their #4's. The fleet was very tight which made it very exciting", they concluded. Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s “Interlodge” finished 2nd - a mere three seconds behind "Tsunami", with Phil Lotz’s “Arethusa”, 8 seconds behind "Interlodge", 3rd, Ken Colburn’s “Apparition” 4th, Andy Fisher’s “Bandit” 5th, and Gibb Kane and Drew Shea’s “Mutiny” 6th with two boats retiring from the race. In the IRC A Class, Linc Mossop’s Swan 42, “The Cat Came Back”, took 6th place. Please visit the results for the complete list of finishers......LINK June 21, 2009 “GENAPI” CLAIMS 2ND PLACE IN GIRAGLIA DISTANCE RACE Jean-Luc Boixel (FR) and Team “GenApi”were brilliant in the Giraglia distance race finishing in 1st place in IRC A and 2nd place overall on corrected time. She completed the 243-mile course in 2 days, 7 hours, 7 minutes and 10 seconds. The closest Swan 42 competition, “KORA4” and “KUUJJUAQ”, finished in 10th and 11th place respectively. TROPEZ On the second day (Monday) of light conditions (maximum of 8.5 knots) at the 57th edition of the Giraglia Rolex Cup, the Yacht Club Italiano set a 20 nautical mile coastal race for the fleet of 192 yachts competing in St. Tropez. 2008 Med Circuit Champion, Enrico Scerni’s “KORA4” (IT) returned to winning form to take Race 2. The one point result gives them the lead on the Swan 42 fleet and second position overall in IRC Class A going into the final race. Leonardo Ferragamo’s “Cuordileone” (IT) moved into contention to continue a long-standing duel with fellow Italian “KORA4”. Jean Luc Boixel’s "GenApi” (FR) currently retains a solid hold on third position in both one-design and IRC Class A overall. The results from the Giraglia Rolex Cup will count towards the Swan 42 Med Circuit in which “Cuordileone” currently holds the lead. With Finnish tactician Kenneth Thelen onboard, some of the key team members are preparing for the upcoming first edition of the NYYC Invitational Cup in September in Newport, RI, in which Ferragamo will helm the entry representing the Finnish Yacht Club, Nylandska Jaktklubben. Today’s final coastal race will decide the winners of the inshore battle for the Giraglia Rolex Cup before the start of the renowned distance race. Five Swan 42’s are competing in this key element of the Mediterranean Swan racing calendar. Over the first 23 nautical mile coastal race, in light conditions, “KuujjuaQ”, skippered by owner-helmsman Ludovic de St. Jean, has taken the initial lead over the one-design fleet and overall in IRC Class A. The talented Enrico Scerni (IT) and “KORA4” are currently in 2nd, with newcomer to the Swan 42 fleet, Jean-Luc Boixel (FR) with “GenApi”, in 3rd. In 4th and 5th place are charter helmsman, the well-known Maxi racer, Carlo Puri Negri (IT), in “Atalanta III”, who celebrated victory in last year's Giraglia after a win in the Maxi fleet with Farr 70 "Atalanta II", and Leonardo Ferragamo with "Cuordileone". With these combined credentials the competition around the inshore races of the next two days and the 243 nautical mile offshore race around the Giraglia rock in Corsica to Genoa promises to be hotly contested. While “Hoss” did not post any bullets today, Glenn Darden and Phil Williamson of Texas kept themselves well placed on the leader board with two 6ths and a 2nd which gave them the overall win in the Swan 42 Class, as well as Rolex Boat of the Day award yesterday. Darden and Williamson commented, “We have a team that really meshed well. Our boat handling and boat speed were very consistent which gave us opportunities to climb through the fleet when we were down. The NYYC race committee did an excellent job of running 6 races in uncertain conditions and the 42 fleet had good tight racing. All in all, a very fun weekend.”

June 13, 2009 “HOSS” LEADS THE WAY AT NYYC ANNUAL REGATTA Three races were executed today for the (15) Swan 42’s. The first was 1.5 miles in light winds 6-10, and the latter two of 1.2 miles each had good breezes at 8-16. The starts were dicey with these large hulls pressing the line, but at the end of the day, “Hoss” continues to make a statement. She took a bullet in Race 1 following it up with a 3rd and 4th respectively. In second place is “Interlodge” who posted a 1st in Race 2. NYYC Commodores Elwell, Hinman and Werdiger took the third bullet of the day in “Conspiracy”. After this first day of the official NYYC Annual Regatta Glenn Darden and Philip Williamson’s “Hoss” leads the regatta with 8 points. It is very close at the top with Austin Fragomen’s “Interlodge”, Ken Colburn’s “Apparition”, Phil Lotz’s “Arethusa”, Chris Culver’s “Blazer”, Malcolm Gefter’s “Celeritas”, and Gary Jobson and Tom Enright’s “Mustang”, all separated by only 6 points. Tonight’s daily prize-giving will be followed by cocktails and a buffet dinner with live music on the lawn under a tent on the magnificent property of the New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court. It is a spectacular evening that will be enjoyed by all owners and crews participating in the 155th Annual Regatta. June 12, 2009 "APPARITION" WINS SWAN 42 PRE-ANNUAL REGATTA RACE DAYAfter two very exciting practice starts as a warm-up for the NYYC Annual Regatta, the Race Committee was only able to execute one race for the Swan 42 Pre-Annual Regatta Race Day. Eleven Swan 42's competed today in a race that was 5.8 miles with winds in the 10-15 range. "Apparition", skippered by Ken Colburn, was the winner. "Off the line we went right into a very favorable shift which put us in 2nd at the mark, had a good second windward leg that put us in first and rounded with a successful gybe set to secure the win. Better lucky than smart!" Second, third and fourth places were secured by Chris Culver and "Blazer", Glenn Darden and Phil Williamson with "Hoss", and Paul Zabetakis with "Impetuous". The NYYC 155th Annual Regatta continues tomorrow with Saturday and Sunday races. June 9, 2009 MED CIRCUIT AND US BOATS GEAR UP FOR UPCOMING REGATTASFive Swan 42's will be heading to St. Tropez for the Giraglia Rolex Cup June 13-20. This is the third leg of the Mediterranean Circuit. This event is a combination of three days of windward leeward day races in the bay of St. Tropez with a gala dinner and prize-giving. This is folllowed by the main race to Genoa around the rock of Giraglia off the coast of Corsica, a distance of 24 miles. On the US side of the ocean, fifteen Swan 42's will be competing this weekend in the New York Yacht Club's 155th Annual Regatta in Newport. Friday has been designated a special Swan 42 Race Day of windward leeward races and all eyes will be on the prize created just for this day. The regatta will continue on Saturday and Sunday with several of the entries vying for a qualifying spot to represent the NYYC at their Invitational Cup September 15-19. The Annual Regatta is the first of the qualifying rounds for the Invitational Cup that will be sailed in Swan 42's and represented by twenty teams from all over the world. June 1, 2009
BLOCK ISLAND RACE WEEK XXIII RULES INTERPRETATION - Revision #1 has been posted.....LINK
June 1, 2009 "HOLMATRO ING" OF THE NETHERLANDS WINS NORTH SEA REGATTATied for first place on equal points at the end of the final race day, it was Lennard van Oeveren's "Holmatro ING" who prevailed by winning the final coastal race to become the overall winner. Finishing in second place on equal points was Filip Balcaen's "Aqua Equinox", with Peter de Graaf's "Baraka GP" in third. All in all the event was a great success with the Race Committee executing a complete schedule of windward/leeward and coastal courses over four glorious days of sunshine and winds between 8-20 knots. Next up for the Northern European ciruit is the Swan European Regatta in Cowes, July 11-17 followed by Cowes Week and the Swan Baltic Sea Challenge in Flensburg, Germany. 30 May 2009 ALL SWAN 42'S POST WINS TODAY IN THE NORTH SEA REGATTA Ideal sailing conditions continue in The Hague and today all three Swan 42's posted wins in Saturday's races. Filip Balcaen's "Aqua Equinox" has a slim one point lead over Lennard van Oeveren's "Holmatro ING". Team "Baraka GP" were thrilled with their tactical victory in the day's final race and went on to celebrate their first bullet in the Club Swan 42 Class. Tomorrow promises to bring great weather conditions again with three windward leeward races scheduled. A longer coastal race is planned for the final day. 29 May 2009NORTHERN EUROPEAN CIRCUIT UNDERWAY IN THE NETHERLANDSToday marked the first day of the newly inaugurated Swan 42 North European Circuit at the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta in Scheveningen in The Hague. Three Swan 42's were on the line racing in an IRC class that included one Swan 45. After two races, Filip Balcaen's "Aqua Equinox" of Belgium is tied for first place with Lennard van Oeveren's "Holmatro ING" of The Netherlands. Peter de Graaf and "Baraka GP", also of The Netherlands, is close behind in 3rd. It is anticipated that favorable conditions will continue through the weekend in what appears to be very competitive racing. The results from the North Sea Regatta will contribute to the North European Circuit Championship which include the Swan European Regatta, Cowes Week, and the Swan Baltic Sea Challenge later this season. 23 May 2009 NO WIND LEAVES "CUORDILEONE" IN FIRST, "KORA4" IN SECONDTry as the Race Committee did to execute at least one race today, it was not meant to be and Saturday's leaders became today's regatta winners. There was no room for redemption from "KORA4" as Enrico Scerni had to settle for second place. Leonardo Ferragamo's "CUORDILEONE" was the victor for the second year in a row adding this laurel to his crown in winning the second leg of the Mediterranean Circuit. Ludovic St. Jean's "KUUJJUAQ" dfinished in third. Next up in the Med Circuit is the Giraglia Rolex Cup in St. Tropez June 13-20. 22 May 2009 "CUORDILEONE" & "KORA4" SEPARATED BY ONE POINT HEADING INTO FINAL RACE DAY It took a late protest yesterday between "KuujjuaQ" and "KORA4" after the results of the day were posted to change the order of the top placements. As a result, "KORA4" was disqualified from Race 3 heading into today's racing. Despite a three-hour delay she claimed the first bullet of the day with a substantial margin. However, "Cuordileone" was not to be stopped and battled back to win the second race today to remain a mere one point ahead of "KORA4" going into tomorrow's final day of racing. Conditions are forecasted to be light again and it is anyone's guess as to how they will finish in this much anticipated duel of these talented skippers and crews. 21 May 2009 "KORA4" IN LEAD AT ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK"KORA4", masterfully sailed by Enrico Scerni, is holding off Leonardo Ferragamo's "Cuordileone" and Ludovic St. Jean's, "KuujjuaQ" after two days at the Rolex Capri Sailing Week. Almost always technically correct and sailed like a well-oiled machine, "KORA4" made a costly error at the start when they were over early giving up one of her bullets to "Cuordileone". Shifty winds prevailed today in a series that concludes on Saturday. 18 May 2009 "BETTER THAN..." TAKES 3RD IN 2-DAY GREENWICH CUPGosia Rojek's "Better Than..." continues to take advantage of local spring series to practice up for Block Island Race Week and the Swan 42 Nationals. With two 1st place finishes, three 3rds, and one 4th, she finished in 3rd place overall in a division that combined the Swan 42 with J/122's, a Farr 395 and a Beneteau First 44.7. Rolex Capri Sailing Week will be underway tomorrow. Results to follow. 3 May 2009"BARLEYCORN", "BETTER THAN..." & "IMPETUOUS" FINISH 1, 2, 3 AT AYC"Barleycorn" proved she was untouchable as she added yet another bullet to her repertoire on the final day of the AYC Spring Series. Not only did Brendan Brownyard collect the 1st place silver tray, but he and his team also won the Perpetual 1888 Trophy Level Racing for One Design with their low points of 6.0 which no other division could match. "We're really pleased with our early season success, but the crew knows real tests will come at the upcoming NYYC Annual Regatta, Block Island Race Week and the Nationals where more than 20 Swan 42's will be on the line", stated Brownyard. "The big rigs on the 42's responded well in the light conditions these past two weekends, but the 42's also like a big breeze - as does our crew! We'll be working to refine some heavy air techniques and hopefully continue to improve our boatspeed", he added. Gosia Rojek, co-owner of "Better Than...", skippering the boat with a taped shoulder, hoped that she would not have to contend with 30 mph winds. She got her wish as the last race of the final day again dealt the fleet with very light winds and rain . Finishing the series in 2nd place, Gosia credits her son, co-owner Marcin Rojek. "Marcin and I have a great connection. He keeps things calm." Class President, Paul Zabetakis, skippered his "Impetuous" to a second place finish in today's race vaulting him into a 3rd place in the series. Zabetakis noted, "Let me be the first to congratulate Brendan on an outstanding regatta. "Barleycorn" sailed a near flawless regatta and begins the 2009 season with a strong, competitive crew - well done." He further added, "Once again, the American Yacht Club has earned the respect of the sailing community for putting on a great regatta." Zabetakis describes jockeying for position with "Daring" and "Mutiny" in the last race. "Daring" caught us on the downwind leg, but we found stronger air and caught her on the next windward leg. "Mutiny" challenged us to get ahead of the fleet and what looked like a second place finish for us, came close to losing to "Mutiny" in the last 100 yards. In jibing to port to cover "Mutiny" we discovered a large rip along the tack of the chute. We thought the chute would explode as we needed two more jibes to finish. Thanks to the staysail and the remaining few functioning panels of the spinnaker we were able to ghost ahead of "Mutiny" finishing less than half a boat length ahead of her. Itv was perhaps one of our most exciting races and finishes. It was a great job done by my crew and I look forwrd to another great season of racing in the Swan 42 fleet." Other finishers were "Mutiny", "Conspiracy", "Daring", "Orbit", and "Quintessence." This concludes the first leg of the East Coast Championship Series. The next event for the class will be the well-attended New York Yacht Club's 155th Annual Regatta in Newport. The regatta will serve as the second leg of the East Coast Series as well as the first of two qualifying legs for one spot on the NYYC's highly competetive Invitational Cup September 15-19 in Newport. The second leg of the Mediterranean Championship Circuit, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week (IT), s upcoming on May 19-23. Three Swan 42's will be competing for honors here: Cuoudileone and "KORA4", both from Italy, and "KuujjuaQ" from France. 2 May 2009 NOTHING LOCKED UP AT AYCThe final day at AYC tomorrow will determine all placements. Despite "Barleycorn's" nine point advantage over second place "Better Than...". only seven points separate second place through sixth place. Two races were held today with the same light and variable winds of last weekend. Gibb Kane and Drew Shea's "Mutiny" crossed the finish line first in Race 5. The course was 6 legs of windward leewards three times around. They took advantage of a big shift on the right and then the wind died down heading towards the second windward mark. They didnlt use their chute, but kept the jib up on the downwind leg. They crept up on "Barleycorn" who then dropped their chute. "Mutiny" got theirs back up first and breezed by and was able to enjoy the lead for the remaining legs as they became reaches with the shifting winds. "Barleycorn" claimed the bullet in Race 6 with "Better Than..." showing good consistency for the regatta garnering two second places on the day. 27 April 2009 "BARLEYCORN" CONTINUES TO DOMINATE AT AYC SPRING SERIESDay 2 of the American YC Spring Series featured much the same conditions for the 8-boat Swan 42 fleet. Sunday called for light easterly breeze, clocking to a westerly by early afternoon, nonetheless forcing a postponement until early afternoon. "Barleycorn" continued her domination winning both Race 3 and 4, finishing this first weekend with 4.0 points in the series. "We were really pleased with this weekend", confirmed Brendan Brownyard, owner. "We had good speed thanks to a couple of new North's aboard and some great crew work . But it was in the shifty conditions we credit our tactician, Kevin Morgan, who started sailing with me as a teenager 15 years ago, worked his way to bow, back to main trim, and now to his first weekend calling the shots." He added, "Kevin kept us in the front in the first 3 races; on the last race we were pretty deep at the first mark, but by the second mark we had passed everyone except for the well-sailed "Conspiracy. On the last beat Kevin was convinced there was more pressure to the right which allowed us to cross "Conspiracy" and hold on for the win." Brownyard concluded, "We'll work hard to hold our lead next weekend and we're loooking forward to a great season with this great Class." Giving good chase this weekend was "Better Than..." owned by husband Andrzej Rojek; wife and skipper, Gosia; and son, Marcin. They took 2nd and 3rd on the day, moving them into a tie with "Impetuous" for 4th place in the series at 16.0 points. "We did our best to anticipate the eventual shifts and were rewarded greatly for being on the correct side of most of them - some of which totalled more than 30 degrees", noted Marcin. "An instrumental malfuntion during practice forced us to change our strategy and stay close to the other boats and play the shifts. Gosia did a great job of keeping the wheel steady (a difficult task in a light breeze) and our crew did a great job of making the boat move fast", he continued. He added, "Many of us are sailing together for the first time as many of our regular crew are participating in a World Championship in Annapolis". "Daring" has closed our the first weekend in 2nd place with 14.0 points with "Conspiracy" right behind her in 3rd with 15.0 points. Next Weekend, May 2-3 is the final weekend of the Spring Series. 25 April 2009 "BARLEYCORN" TAKES EARLY LEAD AT AMERICAN YC SPRING SERIESYou could have fooled everyone into thinking it was a mid-summer regatta with record-breaking temperatures on the opening day of the American Yacht Club Spring Series in Rye, NY on Long Island Sound. This two-day two-weekend regatta is the first leg of the East Coast Championship circuit. Two races were held today, but fog blanketed the Sound delaying the start of Race 1. It was early afternoon before the Southerly kicked in. Eight Swan 42's were at the starting line: "Barleycorn", "Better Than...", "Conspiracy", "Daring", "Impetuous", "Mutiny", "Orbit", and "Quintessence". All reports indicated big wind shifts prevailed throughout the course. At the end of Day 1, "Barleycorn", skippered by Brendan Brownyard, was consistent with two bullets, and is in 1st Place with 2.0 points. "Daring", skippered by John Hele, is in 2nd with 5.0 points. Tied for 3rd with 7.0 points are "Conspiracy", owned by current NYYC Commodore David Elwell and former Commodores George Hinman and Richard Werdiger, and "Impetuous" , skippered by Class President, Paul Zabetakis. 10 March 2009 STELLAR PERFORMANCE BY "LONG ECHO" IN SINT MAARTENBarry Sampson (UK) was brilliant in the IGY Commodore's Cup held on Thursday prior to the Heineken Regatta. Three Swan 42's competed in Racing B's division and bested the eight-boat field. In the three windward leeward races, Barry's "Long Echo" captured three 1st place finishes, while Phil and Wendy Lotz's "Arethusa" finished second and Austin and Gwen Fragomen's "Interlodge" claimed third place. 24 January 2009 "VITESSE" CAPTURES CROWN AT KEY WESTIt all came down to the final day as everyone had two more races in which to put their best foot forward. The fleet jockeyed for positions but there were only two boats that were consistent on the last day. "Tiburon", skippered by Mark Watson, took both bullets for the day and "Apparition", posted two 3rds. In the last race "Vitesse" and "Arethusa" danced to their own tune with "Vitesse"staying ahead of "Arethusa" to protect the series title. At the end of the regatta after the completion of 10 races it was "Vitesse" skippered by Jon Halbert from Dallas, TX who won the class. "It was some of the most exciting racing I've been involved in in a long time", stated Farley Fontenot, a member of the crew. "The final race between Phil (Lotz) and the "Arethusa" team and ourselves was great. We exchanged the lead two or three times with the final beat having 15 tacks and "Vitesse" passing "Arethusa" on the final exchange of the race. It was so exciting". "Arethusa" ended up in a very close 2nd place for the regatta with "Celeritas" in 3rd. "Our results have come from hard practice" noted Dave Doucett, Captain on "Celeritas". "We had a great practice weekend back in Newport in the Fall with the Key West crew and got out early with the team here in Key West. Malcolm (the owner) has been cooking the crew gourmet meals every night!", he added. "Tiburon" finished 4th, with "Apparition" 5th and "Long Echo" 6th. Weather conditions have been kind to the fleet this year and another two races were held today. In Race 7 (8.07 miles), Mark Watson's "Tiburon" was the winner and Barry Sampson's "Long Echo" from the UK placed 2nd, series bests for both boats respectively. Race 8 was a 9.91 mile course. Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" claimed the bullet with Malcolm Gefter's "Celeritas" in 2nd, and Jon Halbert's "Vitesse" (Dallas, TX) in 3rd. Sailing good, clean races tomorrow will be key as "Arethusa", "Vitesse" and "Celeritas" are separated by only 4 points. The fleet is starting to mix things up a bit with "Arethusa" taking the first race today followed by "Vitesse" and "Celeritas". However, in Race 4 it was "Celeritas" once again on top with "Vitesse" in 2nd and "Apparition" in 3rd. Only one point separates the second and third place boats, "Vitesse" and "Arethusa". "Tiburon and "Apparition" are tied for fourth place. The winds were strong and from the westin spite of a minor disruption of a brief squall line that passed through without incident. The fleet is clearly bunched in second place with Ken Colburn's "Apparition", Phil Lotz's "Arethusa", Mark Watson's "Tiburon", and "Jon Halbert's "Vitesse" all with 7 points on the day, and Barry Sampson's "Long Echo" rounding out the fleet.

This is Saint Tropez's 10th Les Voiles regatta and the town is host to an impressive list of traditional one, two and three masted yachts and modern yachts including Maxis. Over 3,000 yachtsmen have descended on the town, well-known for its love of sailing, and four projection screens have been mounted throughout the city for public viewing of the gala event. 28 September 2008 ABANDONED RACING ON LAST DAY GIVES "TSUNAMI" AYC CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Perhaps it was revenge of the wind gods or global warming, but Mother Nature didn't leave much chance for redemption on the race course today. After only 1.5 legs completed, a flat calm descended on the fleet and ultimately the race was abandoned. Thus, the results at the end of yesterday stood with "Tsunami" taking 1st place, with "Arethusa" 2nd, "Barleycorn" 3rd, followed by "Bandit", "Mutiny", "Better Than...", "Celeritas", "Orbit", and "Quintessence". The win was nontheless a sweet one for Team Tsunami and Team Arethusa who bettered their 2nd and 3rd place finishes respectively from the AYC Spring Series. For some, this marks the end of the 2008 season with the focus now on the migration to Florida for Acura Key West Race Week in January. Others will continue to compete locally in Indian Harbor Yacht Club's Gearbuster Race on October 11, and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club's Fall Series October 18-19 & 25-26, while others will head to the IRC East Coast Championship in Annapolis October 31-November 2. 27 September 2008 "TSUNAMI" CONTINUES TO DOMINATE AT AYC FALL SERIESThe second weekend of the American Yacht Club's Fall got off to a great start with nine Swan 42's completing three races today. "Tsunami", skippered by Bud Dailey took bullets in Races 3 and 4 and "Arethusa", skippered by Phil Lotz took the bullet in Race 5. "Tsunami" has a strong foothold on winning the series with 6 points, but things are very close at the top with the next four boats. "Arethusa" is currently in second place with 10 points, "Barleycorn" in third with 11 points, "Bandit" in fourth with 13 points, and "Mutiny" in fifth place with 16 points. The awards presentation will be tomorrow afternoon on the lawn of AYC overlooking Long Island Sound. Typical to after race day celebrations, refreshments will be served to all competitors. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond, three Swan 42's are currently in Saint-Tropez awaiting Monday's start of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. "Cuordileone", "Daring", and "Interlodge" will all be competing in IRC. 21 September, 2008 2008 NETHERLANDS CLUB SWAN 42 CHAMPION CROWNEDThis past weekend the 2008 Dutch Championships were held at Marina Seaport IJmuiden, about 30 minutes from Amsterdam. At the end of the three-day championship, "HOLMATRO ING RE", Club Swan Hull No. 42/033, skippered by Lennard Van Oeveren, won overall to claim the Dutch Championship in IRC for 2008. Congratulations! Today the fleet at American Yacht Club only managed one race due to light conditions. The course was eventually shortened to 3.375 nautical miles sailed under a light southerly breeze of 5 or less knots. "Tsunami" had a great start at the pin while two boats were over. She continued to hold the lead the entire way. "We had an overlap with "Bandit" who sailed the best beat of anyone", noted Bud Dailey, "Tsunami's" skipper. "We tacked to lay the mark and if we had gone any further to the right "Bandit" would have passed us by", he added. "There was pressure in the leeward leg and we held on longer on the port gybe than "Bandit" which put them further North. We got good pressure to extend our lead on "Bandit" and covered them to get to the lay line with good boat speed and a lot of luck". "Bandit" was 2nd, "Barleycorn" 3rd, "Better Than..." 4th, "Arethusa" 5th, "Mutiny" 6th, "Orbit" 7th, and "Celeritas" 8th. September 20, 2008 "MUTINY'S" WIN - LUCK OR LOCAL KNOWLEDGE? Co-owners Drew Shea and Gibb Kane of Rye, NY claim it was luck rather than local knowledge that gave them the win in Race 1 of the AYC Fall Series. Somehow they managed to come from 5th place at the leeward mark to claim the first bullet in the 7.8 mile 4-leg course today with an East wind at approximately 8 knots. "We got very lucky", says Shea. "Our zone of breeze lifted us off "Arethusa's" hip. The boats that went to the beach did not have an advantage. We managed to stay in the breeze the whole way. The downwind leg with "Arethusa" had us separated by one or two boat lengths." "Arethusa" finished second, followed by "Barleycorn" who had led the way around the leeward mark, "Tsunami" was fourth, followed by "Bandit", "Better Than...", "Orbit", and "Celeritas". The second race was cancelled due to diminishing winds. It is hoped there will be two races on Sunday. September 19, 2008 NINE 42'S PARTICIPATE IN AMERICAN YACHT CLUB FALL SERIES This weekend marks the first of two weekends in back to back racing in the American Yacht Club's Fall Series held in Long Island Sound. The fleet includes "Arethusa", "Bandit", "Barleycorn", "Better Than...", "Celeritas", "Mutiny","Orbit", "Quintessence", and "Tsunami". KATTACK GPS tracking systems will once again be on-board. This series will be followed by a few more local regattas and ending with the Storm Trysail Club's IRC East Coast Championship in Annapolis, MD at the end of October, the last US regatta of the 2008 season. Meanwhile, several Club Swan 42's will congregate in France for Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, September 27 - October 4th. In this last event for the 2008 Med circuit, they will compete in IRC. Participants include both "Daring" and "Interlodge" from the US with as many as three entries to be confirmed from Europe. September 14, 2008 "KORA4" WINS CLASS AT ROLEX SWAN CUP WITH EASEWith one last race today Course 1 was an 8-mile windward/leeward wth winds in the 16-18 range with gusts in the 20's. Three boats were over early: "Affair", "Baraka GP", and Daring", and that clearly changed the dynamics on the course. "KORA4" had the lead to the first mark, but was overtaken by "Couordileone". "Interlodge" was third at the mark, however "KuujjuaQ" passed "Interlodge" at the actual rounding. At the second windward mark "KORA4" and "Courdileone" were neck and neck with "KuujjuaQ" close on their stern. "Interlodge" and "Daring" were 4th and 5th respectively on the second windward mark rounding and upon setting the chute, "Interlodge" ended up being pinned in by three Maxis which allowed "Daring" to pass. "It was a good race - this last day, and we needed to finish in the top five so we were were very conservative in order to control our placement", stated Diogo Cayolla, Tactician for "KORA4". "Passing "Couordileone" was double satisfaction and to win four races out of six showed we were very consistent. Apart from the first two races, four boats were very competitive", he added. Tactician Enrico Zennaro for "Courdileone" stated "It was a very difficult race because of the very strong winds in the range of 25-26. The gybe maneuver was most important and we lost it on the last gybe. We were happy with our performance". The final results of the Rolex Swan Cup with one throwout race are as follows: "KORA 4" 6 points"Courdileone" 13 points "Interlodge" 14 points "Daring" 15 points"KuujjuaQ" 21 points"Barkaka GP" 29 points"Affair" 34 points September 13, 2008 HIGH WINDS CANCELS DAY 5Once again Mother Nature seems to plague the Rolex Swan Cup. A front came in overnight and after a couple of postponements with winds in excess of 30 the Race Committee cancelled races for the day. Tomorrow will be a crucial day. It is hoped to have at least two races on the final day as things are quite close at the top. September 12, 2008 MOTHER NATURE & RACE 5Once again, light winds kept the 42's at the docks in postponement on Day 4 of the Rolex Swan Cup. With more postponements on the water, the start was eventually executed at 1530. Course #25 was 17 miles - a much shortened version of the planned 60 mile race got off to a slow start, but towards the end of the race the skies blackened, lightning strikes were the rule and the gusts approached 40. "It was very exciting from Monaci Lighthouse to Peveron" exclaimed Nicolo Reggio, Relief Helmsman on "Courdileone". "Staying high and using our A-3 was our strategy" he continued. Although "Daring" had held the lead, the top boats watched as "KORA4" passed to leeward. "KORA4 is very fast" confirmed Reggio and John Hele of "Daring". At the end of Day 5 "KORA4" is in 1st with 7 points, "Interlodge" in 2nd with 14, "Courdileone" in 3rd with 15, and "Daring" in 4th with 16. "KuujjuaQ", "Baraka GP", and "Affair" round out the field. September 11, 2008 LIGHT WINDS CANCEL ROLEX SWAN CUP COASTAL RACE Race 5 scheduled for today was to be a coastal race of approximately 60 miles. Due to light winds, the race was cancelled at 12:30PM. Tomorrow's Lay Day will now be used with racing to start 1.5 hours earlier in order to maximize the day. September 10, 2008 US & ITALY TOP THE LEADER BOARD AT ROLEX SWAN CUP ON DAY 2Day Two of the Rolex Swan Cup brought light winds in the 9-10 knot range. The approximate 2.0 mile course with 4 legs provided for two distinct approaches to the windward mark with a significant wind shift to the right on the first windward leg. "Daring" from the US held the lead the entire race in spite of lightening winds to 7-8 knots after the second windward mark and continued to the finish line. "KORA4" from Italy finished in 2nd passing "Interlodge" from the US on the last leg ending in 3rd. "Courdileone" of Italy was in 4th with "KuujjuaQ" of France in 5th, "Baraka GP" of The Netherlands in 6th and Lithuania's "Affair" in 7th. A number of protests flew at the starting line of Race 4 which were withdrawn at the end of the day as well as the protest on a mark rouonding. "INTERLODGE" of the USA skippered by Austin Fragomen took the bullet in Race 4. Austin and his wife, Gwen, credit teamwork as the result of their victory. "The crew did an incredibly great job - terrific teamwork . The European boats are very competitive and the finish was fantastic with a number of the boats finishing within 15 seconds of each other." "KORA4" was second, "Daring" third, "Courdileone" 4th, "KuujjuaQ" 5th, "Baraka GP" 6th, and "Affair" 7th. After Day 2 "KORA4" leads the series with 6 points, "Interlodge" has 10 points, "Courdileone" 12, "Daring" 14, "KuujjuaQ" 18, "Baraka GP" 24, and "Affair" 28. September 9, 2008 ITALIANS TAKE EARLY LEAD AT ROLEX SWAN CUPThe Cub Swan 42's made their maiden appearance at the Rolex Swan Cup at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo, Sardinia and it was the first opportunity for the European boats to compete against the two entries from the US. Two races were held today with "KORA4" skippered by Enrico Scerni of Italy taking bullets in Race 1 and Race 2 and "Courdileone", skippered by Leonardo Ferragamo also of Italy placing 2nd in both races. USA's Austin Fragomen's "Interlodge" kept a very close 3rd in both races. The pattern continued with "KuujjuaQ" of France, skippered by Ludovic De Saint Jean, in 4th; USA's John Hele and "Daring" in 5th, Olivier Graaf's "Baraka GP" of The Netherlands in 6th and Lithuania's Algirdas Pasukevicius in 7th place with "Affair". Racing was competitive this first day with a great deal of enthusiasm. Predictions are for lighter winds the next two days with a front coming through on Friday, the lay day, which should provide good winds Saturday and Sunday. August 26, 2008 NEW YORK YACHT CLUB WORLD INVITATIONAL CUPAs reported in Scuttlebutt, Commodore Charles H. Townsend announced today the inauguration of the New York Yacht Club World Invitational Cup, an invitational fleet-racing regatta. It's goal is to bring together amateur yacht club teams competing against teams from around the world. The sailing will be tough and demanding, allowing each club to demonstrate the skills of top sailors. According to Commodore Townsend, "The event will once again bring the Corinthian spirit to the forefront of the sport and enable us to share the excitement of sailing on the waters of Rhode Island Sound." Invitations have been sent to many of the most prestigious yacht clubs of the world inviting them to compete in this first biennial event scheduled for September 15-19, 2009 at the NYYC's Harbour Court waterfront location in Newport, RI. Racing on Rhode Island Sound will be done in the newly developed NYYC Swan 42 fleet. "We expect the New York Yacht Club World Invitational Cup to be a friendly competition between the world's most prominent yacht clubs," said Commodore Townsend. Please see the complete details at http://www.nyyc.org/worldinvitationalcup August 22, 2008 MOTHER NATURE TESTS "CELERITAS" IN IDA LEWIS DISTANCE RACE Team "Celeritas" was part of a 4-boat in Handicap Rules Class for IRC in the August 15th 177-mile distance race. "Celeritas" was the smallest boat and placed third on corrected time. According to owner, Malcolm Gefter, "The race went off uneventfully except for the violent thunderstorms the first night out. We managed to escape them all, but they managed to steal the wind for several hours. After wandering in circles, and putting up every sail we had to get moving, daybreak brought a fresh breeze (15-20 knots) from Norman's land around Buzzard's Bay toward Montauk and then back to Newport. Between Montauk and Newport we flew the 3-A spinnaker and the jib top stimultaneously for about an hour in the 20 knot breeze. We topped 11 knots of speed but found the combo too difficult to control on a steady basis. We arrived in Newport Harbor flying the 2-A just after midnight where we were met by the Race Committee with a cold bottle of champagne!" August 5, 2008 SWAN 42'S GEARING UP FOR ROLEX SWAN CUPSeptember 8-14 marks the first time the Swan 42's from the US and Europe will meet as a One Design Class on the race course at the Rolex Swan Cup at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. Entries include "Aella" from Greece, "Affair" from Lithuania, "Baraka GP" from The Netherlands, "Courdileone" from Italy, "Daring" and "Interlodge" from the USA, "KORA4" from Italy and, "KuujjuaQ" from France. Racing commences on September 9th and concludes on September 14th. The event will feature spectacular sailing conditions with top-notch social events. August 2, 2008 "KORA4" FINISHES 1ST AND 2ND IN IRC EVENTS IN THE MEDEnrico Scerni had an uphill battle with "KORA4" at Real Club Nautica's Copa del Rey regatta in Palma, Mallorca this past week. With time given to a competitior in the same division, "KORA4" finished 2nd in the premiere European event which spanned the course of six days. Happy with his finish, it seems he is using this regatta as a dress rehearsal for the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, next month. Conditions were stellar during the week with breezes in the 12-18 knot range every afternoon. It must be said that this may perhaps be one of the best run regattas on the international circuit and is extremely well managed by Real Club Nautica with fantastic racing, facilities and social program. Try to make this event part of your schedule in 2009! Earlier in the season, "KORA4" won her IRC Class in the Giraglia Rolex Cup, a highly-respected distance race for European sailors for over 50 years. The 243 nautical mile course left St. Tropez, France rounding Giraglia on the northern coast of Corsica and finishing in Genoa, Italy. She had the best combined score from three days of inshore racing in St. Tropez and the Giraglia Race and as a result won the The Challenge Nucci Novi Trophy. August 2 & 3, 2008 NYYC SWAN 42'S STRONG CONTENDERS IN QUEEN & ASTOR CUPSFollowing up on Nationals with a few days rest, the Swan 42's were off and running again in back to back races which were part of the NYYC Annual Cruise. In the Queen's Cup Chris Bulger's "Blazer" and Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" finished 2nd and 3rd. The following day in the Astor Cup, "Arethusa" took top billing followed by"Conspiracy", skippered by Vice Commodore David Elwell, and "Blazer" in 3rd. July 26 & 27, 2008 "TIBURON" TAKES 2008 US NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLEConsistency proved to be the order of the series as Mark Watson and "Tiburon" clinched the US Nationals with a 1st and 3rd finish on Saturday followed up by a 4th in the final race on Sunday. "Tsunami", skippered by Bud Dailey took a bullet in Saturday's first race with Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" and Chris Bulger's "Blazer" both taking 2nd place irespectively in Race 5 and 6 of Saturday's races. "Daring", skippered by John Hele had a best 3rd place finish in the second race on Saturday. Sunday marked the final day of the 20-boat 4-day National championship with Ken Colburn's "Apparition" finishing 1st in the sole Sunday race with Jon Halbert's "Vitesse" and Tom Hirsch's "Downhill Express" in 2nd and 3rd respectively. At the end of the week, the final results of US Nationals had "Tiburon" in 1st, "Tsunami" in 2nd, "Apparition" in 3rd, "Vitesse" in 4th, "Impetuous" in 5th, and "Arethusa" in 6th. July 25, 2008 TEXAS TEAMS PROVE THEY ARE TOP CONTENDERS AT NATIONALSAmidst light winds and 2-4' seas, the Swan fleet of 20 boats had not one, but three General Recalls in Race 1 of Day 2 of Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. Light winds prevailed and "Apparition", skippered by Ken Colburn of Dover, MA, seemed to live up to her name taking line honors in Race 1. The finish was extremely close with "Tiburon", skippered by Texan, Mark Watson, taking 2nd, and "Tsunami", skippered by Bud Dailey of Edgewater, MD, taking 3rd. "The Cat Came Back", skippered by David Lussier of Newport, RI, "Bandit", skippered by Andy Fisher of Greenwich, CT, and "Vitesse", skippered by Texan, Jon Halbert, finished 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. The all-women's team of "Better Than...", skippered by Gosia Rojek of NY placed 7th. Colburn remarked, "Crew teamwork is always key to any success and everyone did a great job today. Our strategy and approach in light air with chop was to minimize tacks and maintain clear air. Keeping the boat moving through the chop and looking for any wind advantage also paid off. We felt we had the boat well-tuned for today's conditions which meant that our point and speed were competitive". "The Cat Came Back" also loved up to her namesake. Lussier commented, "We had great starts even though we were never over early in any of the General Recalls. We passed a lot of boatsand are very excited about our improvements".
Race 2 got off to a clean start although winds lightened and ultimately the course was shortened. "Tiburon" swapped places taking the bullet with "Apparition" in 2nd, and "Blazer", skippered by Chris Bulger of Brookline, MA, in 3rd. Rounding out the top six were "Impetuous", skippered by Swan 42 Class President, Paul Zabetakis, of Jamestown, RI, "Tsunami", and "Barleycorn", skippered by Brendan Brownyard of Bay Shore, NY, finishing 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. After Day 2, the combined total of points places "Tiburon" in 1st, "Apparition" and "Tsunami" tied for 2nd, "Vitesse" in 4th, "Impetuous" in 5th and "Blazer" in 6th. NATIONALS KICKS OFF AMIDST THUNDER & LIGHTNINGThe second US Nationals had the 20 Swan 42's battling the elements with strong cells and lightning strikes at the start and downpours and 2-3 foot seas during the race. Two races were completed on Day 1 of the Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. 2007 East Coast Champions, "Tsunami", skippered by Bud Dailey from Maryland, was the winner of Race 1. "Celeritas", skippered by Malcolm Gefter, showed his prowess on shorter distance races finishing 2nd. "Celeritas" was the recent Swan 42 winner of the Newport to Bermuda distance race. "Vitesse", skippered by Jon Halbert from Texas placed 3rd. "Wow, what a day for racing" exclaimed Dailey on "Tsunami". "It is incredible how iompetitive the fleet is. We were lucky to get a start at the pin, as we were looking to go left toward the shore line. After a fairly long starboard tack we were able to cross on port and took a long tack to the starboard layline for the weather mark. We had "Vitesse" really pushing hard the whole way. After rounding the windward mark, "Tiburon" rounded a vew boats back and really had the angle and a puff and took off like a rocket. We were able to pull off a successful gybe in the fairly strong breeze and that helped a lot. We took the left mark at the gate and went a short while lon port before taking the long tack on starboard back towads the shore. "Vitesse" got on starboard earlier and really made out well. We were barely able to hold her off during the last beat. "Celeritas" did a real good job going up the right side of the beat and was able to get ahead of "Vitesse". In summary he added, "It's early in the series and it's going to be a tough, fun series". '"In Race 2 "Interlodge", skippered by Austin Fragomen, finished in 1st with "Tiburon", skippered by Mark Watson in 2nd and followed by "Vitesse". Mark Watson enthusiastically declared, "It's the first time we've consistently been on a plane at 16 knots and it was really exciting.....a whole new experience!" He added, "The boats were close together with many position changes which made for exciting sailing. Premiere boat-handling skills were needed today as we could power up the boat at 22 knots with some some gusts in the high 20's downwind." At the end of Day 1 "Vitesse" is holding a small lead over "Tsunami" with "Tiburon" in 3rd place."Vitesse" has to be pleased with her results. Texan, Jon Halbert "Our goal for this regatta is to stay consistent and try not to lose the regatta on the first day. We have really been working on our set-up's and maximizing our rig tune with no headstay movement, but we have never seen conditions like this, so we are all very pleased. This is a long regatta and there are a lot of races to go. We are just happy to have survived the day".On his win in Race 2, Austin Fragomen noted "Conditions were very challengingand our plan was to sail conservatively and try not to make any mistakes. We had a good start and a great leg downwind with no hitches. The crew did a great job and executed well throughout the race. Bottom line.....nothing bad happened in heavy wind." July 15, 2008 Record Number of Swan 42's Compete in US NationalsThe 2008 US Nationals being held July 24-27 in conjunction with the Rolex New York Yacht Club Annual Race Week will see a record number of 20 Swan 42's on the line in Newport. Points accumulated in this event will count towards the 2008 East Coast Championship, part of the inshore regatta series. The entry from the UK, "Long Echo", owned by Barry Sampson will be coming the greatest distance followed up by "Tiburon" and "Vitesse" from Texas. Other entries include "Apparition", "Arethusa", "Bandit", "Barleycorn", and "Better Than...", owned and skipperd by Gosia Rojek and featuring an all-women crew. "Blazer", "Celeritas", "Conspiracy", "Daring", "Downhill Express", "Impetuous", "Interlodge", " Mutiny", "Orbit","Quintessence", "The Cat Came Back", and "Tsunami" complete the entry list. Four days of racing for the Swan 42 One Design Class will commence on Thursday and end on Sunday. There will be receptions each night with daily prize-givings and dinner under the tent on the lawn of the NYYC on Saturday evening with the presentation of some special Swan 42 Class awards. Sunday evening marks the final Rolex prize-giving. June 29, 2008 "Impetuous" and "The Cat Came Back" Place in Top Three at Block Island At Block Island Race Week, “Impetuous” finished in 2nd with “The Cat Came Back” in 3rd. Pleased with the results, Class President, Paul Zabetakis, commented “We were the only IRC boat to beat the King 40 (“Act One”). Impetuous actually beat them twice …..not an easy task considering their rating (the Swan 42 owes them time) and the fact that they are a purpose built IRC boat”. June 26, 2008 "Celeritas" Top Finisher in Bermuda RaceMalcolm Gefter and Team "Celeritas" were the first Swan 42 to cross the finish line in 95 hours 30 minutes placing them 5th in Division 8 of the St. David's Lighthouse Division (ORR) of the 635-mile Newport to Bermuda Race. Following were "Barleycorn", skippered by Brendan Brownyard, "Morgan's Ghost", skippered by Bermuda owner Preston Hutchings, "Conspiray", skippered by George Hinman, and "Mutiuny", skippered by charterer, Edward Mandara, III. Gefter explained Team "Celeritas's" strategy, "Our plans, spearheaded by our navigator, Rob Morton, were to follow the near consistent outlook for weather and Gulf Stream reports. This called for going west of the rhumb line (loxodrome) to catch the warm ring eastern edge for a 2kt favorable current before reaching the stream. Our tactical plan was to sail above 8.kts of speed and assess whether or not we could fetch the warm ring. Twelve hours in, it began to become clear that we would have to tack to port to get the ring. The crew collectively decided to take the chance and tack to go west to the ring. We went west until the favorable curent was seen and the water temperature indicated we had hit the ring. We tacked back on to starboard and rode the current for about 30 miles with a push of about 1.5kts. On exiting the ring and reaching the northern edge of the stream it was clear that we had to cross the stream on port tack - we all met and decided to go, but.....an 8kt wind made this not very effective. By assessing that we were at least 40 miles west of the other Swan 42's and equally close to Bermuda, we decided to consolidate our position and enter the stream on starboard, i.e., going east for a bit, waiting for more pressure and after about an hour, the breeze filled in and we tacked to port to cross the stream. This was uneventful. On exiting we tacked back to starboard and headed for Bermuda. We did encounter a squall and got becalmed for about a half an hour and had also taken on water in the anchor locker, but that's racing! The wind predictions suggested a possible tack back on port for more west, but as time progressed, we started to get lifted suggesting being able to fetch Bermuda in about 40 hours. Our position with respect to the other Swan 42's continuously improved. We were advancing with very little loss of gauge. Wind predictions kept on suggesting more lift as we went South and so it remained right to Kitchen Shoals." Gefter added, " The sailing was very demanding on the 42 crew. Steering was sometimes very difficult with strong wave action causing rather powerful yawing.....our steering platforms will be enlarged to improve this situation. The rudder was fine! Winds of 20+ sailing at about 30 degrees apparent were fine for a full main and heavy jib. Speeds averaged about 9.5kts (hitting 11.6 top winner)." Reflecting on his crew, Gefter commented, "The crew worked extremely hard to make this happen. We were pushed by the other 42's not giving any ground easily.....we were ALSO cognizant of "Barleycorn" and "Conspiracy" being in sight of each other and certainly pushing each other hard.....this kept us motivated for sure.....thanks to them. Congratulations to the Swan 42 crews for finishing!" A reception for Swan 42's was held last evening at The Waterloo House's terrace overlooking Hamilton Harbor and the Beruda Race fleet. Some 50 race participants exchanged 'war stories' of the endurance race while sipping Dark & Stormy's, the traditional Bermuda drink. This evening, Malcolm Gefter received a Swan 42 Half Hull from Nautor USA at their cocktail reception before the Swan Owners Association dinner at the Hamilton Princess. LINK to race results......

Swan 42's Split Tacks with Bermuda and Block IslandFive Swan 42's embarked on the 635-mile ocean race from Newport to Bermuda this afternoon. Competing in the second leg of the Offshore Series Championship in the Swan 42 Class, "Barleycorn", "Celeritas", "Conspiracy", "Mutiny", and "Morgan's Ghost" will be out of sight of land for most of the race and are expected to arrive in Bermuda sometime on Tuesday. The race crosses a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean known for challenging weather, especially in the Gulf Stream, where there are strong currents. By the end of the afternoon today, close to 200 boats will have crossed the starting line in a variety of divisions. The Swan 42's will have their eyes on the prizes.....the prestigious St. David's Lighthouse Trophy and the Swan 42 Class Trophy. On the opposite side of the spectrum, "Impetuous" and "The Cat Came Back" will be competing in Block Island Race Week. Block Island offers fantastic sailing and is a favorite family event. June June 15, 2008 "Tsunami" Takes Day Two of the NYYC 154th Annual Regatta , but "Arethusa" Maintains Her Hold on the Series Lead2007's East Coast Champions, co-owners Bud Dailey & Preben Ostberg, took 1st in both races for the day. On their victories, Dailey and Ostberg offered,”Racing the NYYC Swan 42 Class is the most fun and competitive sailing we have ever done, and it gets better every event. Our goal for Sunday was to improve on Saturday’s performance, try and get better starts and not make costly mistakes. Our first start wasn’t very good so we were forced to tack early - we were looking to go left. When we tried to go left we got tacked on twice forcing us to go right. Luckily the wind shifted right and it put us back in the battle. It was close racing and we covered when we could. In the second race, our start was a little better. We found a lane on port just to windward of most of the pack and took a long port tack, always keeping an eye on the boats to the left. “Bandit” was always pressing and we were able to cross them on port at a critical time. They kept it close but we were able to squeak by at the top mark. “Vitesse” was always there and pushing us hard all day, and they did a great job in the series. I would attribute our success to the whole team and all the hard work they have put in since April, and how well our boat is run by our Captain Tim Fetsch”. "Bandit", with a 3rd and a 2nd took 2nd for the day, followed by "Vitesse" in 3rd. "We worked on getting clean starts that we thought let us get to the favored side of the course. In doing so we gave away some line favor and started closer to the Committee Boat. This allowed us to get to the first mark with the leaders. We made our biggest gains downwind. On both races we sailed toward what we thought was more pressure, based on our upwind observations, what we saw on the water and what we saw in the other fleets. We also kept an eye on wind direction trends. We wanted to stay on the favored jibe, but we were mindful that the shifts were long in duration and we could sail the lift for some time before jybing. That said, we got more than our fair share of breaks trying to put this all together." "Vitesse", skippered by Jon Halbert of Texas was 2nd on the day and "Impetuous", skippered by Jamestown resident, Paul Zabetakis, is in 3rd place.....LINK for race results June 13, 2008One Second Splits Top Finishers in Distance Race of the NYYC's 154th Annual Regatta. The three-day regatta kicked off with a distance race on Friday. The results proved that the locals had no advantage as our owners from Texas skippered their boats into 1st and 2nd place. Tiburon , skippered by Mark Watson and "Hoss", co-owned by Glenn Darden and Philip Williamson, were in a photo finish. On his win, Watson declared, "While I have competed in a number of NYYC events, this was my first Annual Regatta. The conditions for the distance event could not have been better.....good sea breeze all day giving us great windward/leeward racing most of the day.....and with a great view of the island!" He added, "We had a great start.....just where we wanted to be and changed leads several times en route to the windward mark at Beaver Tail. Staying inshore and out of the current was essential. The downwind leg was close racing all the way down the bay with several lead changes again. It wasn't until the last few boat lengths from the windward mark that we held our position and rounded first. On the last beat we stayed inside with good pressure all the way to the finish. The wind was very shifty, and we were able to stay with it." "Bandit", skippered by Andy Fisher, followed up in 3rd. June 3, 2008 Double-Header Heats Up for Mid-June RegattasJune will find the Swan 42's from the Americas fleet dueling for championship points in both the East Coast Championship at the New York Yacht Club's 154th Annual Regatta as well as the Offshore Series in the Newport to Bermuda Race a week later. The Annual Regatta, June 13-15, will have sixteen Swan 42's battling it out for the summer season opener. Most of the boats are from the New England/New York area with a couple of owners coming in from Texas for the event. The 101st Newport to Bermuda Race will have six Swan 42's on the starting line on Friday, June 20th. "Barleycorn", "Celeritas", "Conspiracy", "Morgan's Ghost", "Mutiny", and "Orbit" will be racing for the prestigious St. David's Lighthouse Trophy (won by a Swan 45 in 2004). as well as Class points in the Offshore Series. In other area races, "Celeritas" and "Hoss" will be participating in Sail Newport's Halfway Rock Regatta June 7-8 and "Impetuous" and "The Cat Came Back" will be competing at Block Island Race Week June 15-20. May 27, 2008"Celeritas" Wins Block Island RaceMalcolm Gefter and Team Celeritas won their Class in the first offshore long distance race of the season. Phil Lotz's "Arethusa" was second while "Mutiny", skippered by Edward Mandara, III, and representing a 3-boat entry for the American Yacht Club took second in Team Racing and Third in Class. Gefter noted "The conditions overall seemed to be in "the sweet spot" for the '42 and strategy was based on winds averaging 17 knots out of the Northwest switching to the West by daybreak. At the start we had pretty much a run all the way until nightfall. The breeze increased to about 26 knots which was well above all forecasts as we headed for Plum Gut. At dawn we were rounding Block Island staying as close to shore as possible and out of unfavorable current at 1-BI. The big decision was a route back. Forecasts were mixed as to wind speed and direction down the Sound.....if the sea breeze filled in, westerly held or Notherly predominated. We decided to play the middle going just North of Plum Island. This almost cost us the race as we found ourselves in several 'holes' of no wind three times. We were lucky to escape each one after slowing to under 2 knots each time. Gradually we made our way to the CT shore and, as it turned out the Northerly predominated. We stayed as high as possible all the way to the finish with our Jib Top averaging about 9.5 knots for the last 30 miles. In other words, we were lucky!", Malcolm declared......LINK for race results May 23, 2008Storm Trysail Club's Block Island Race UpdateSix Swan 42's started the Storm Trysail Club's distance race of 185 nautical miles from Stamford (CT) to Block Island (RI) and back to Stamford. The race started at 5PM Friday with the fastest boats expected to finish mid to late afternoon on Saturday. April 27, 2008Spring Opener - American Yacht Club "Mutiny" in 1st Place at end of first weekend of American Yacht Club's Spring Series......LINK for race results April 26 and 27 marked the first weekend of the Spring competitive season with the Swan 42’s. Nine boats rallied for the first weekend of the American Yacht Club’s Spring Series with eleven expected on the second weekend.
Bud Dailey and Preben Ostberg’s “Tsunami”, winner of the 2007 East Coast Championships, were the leaders after Day 1 with a Second and First Place Finish. However, Day 2’s laurels were swapped with “Mutiny”, owned by Gibb Kane and Drew Shea. They find themselves clearly in 1st Place overall with a First and Fourth place finish on Day 1 and a First and Second on Day 2.
The Lotz family has good reason to celebrate. “Arethusa” ably skippered by Phil Lotz finds himself in 2nd Place overall. Sailing with his wife, Wendy, and son, Chris, it is a real family affair. “I think overall it was a pretty tricky weekend with the breeze at the upper end of the 3 and into the 4 on Sunday – which made boat handling important; then a light to moderate easterly that had its share of holes and shifts. Consistency was important – with “Mutiny” the most consistent - and the rest of us rotating in and out of the top 3. Weekend Two provided winds steady at 24-25 knots out of the East with gusts reaching 29-30 and 4-8' seas for Saturday's race. Eleven boats started the race and six finished. "Everyone struggled upwind and down", noted Roger Widmann of "Quintessence". "We tried to fly a spinnaker in the practice race and made the decision not to fly the chute in the race which is probably why we won that race". He added, "We saw a J/44 dismasted, a number of spinnakers blow up and others who couldn't even get their spinnakers up. There was a lot of broaching that day. I give credit to anyone who finished the race". "Mutiny" took the bullet on Sunday maintaining their lead in the series. "Tsunami" finds herself in second place overall with "Arethusa" and "Daring" tied for third place and "Conspiracy" only one point behind.....see recent race results for details. April 22, 2008
