What a year for the Swan 42 Class Association! Within only one year of the 2006 launch of hull #1, Conspiracy, 18 boats participated in the first-ever National Championship for the Swan 42 Class in September of 2007. The year was indeed marked by multiple successes for the Swan 42. We began 2007 with Esmeralda winning her IRC division at Key West Race Week followed by 4 boats (Conspiracy, Impetuous, Mutiny, and Bandit) competing in our first one-design event at the American Yacht Club Spring Series. Congratulations to all of the winners of our first series of one-design events; AYC Spring Series: Conspiracy; NYYC Annual Regatta: Tsunami; 2007 BIRW: Tsunami; Swan American Regatta: Bandit; US Nationals: Amelia; AYC Fall Regatta: Daring.
The Swan 42 has also convincingly demonstrated her outstanding performance characteristics by succeeding in several IRC events. First place finishes were posted in all four competitive IRC events entered this year; 2007 KWRW: Esmeralda; Block Island Race: Conspiracy; Manhasset Bay Fall Series: Quintessence; IRC East Coast Championship: Tsunami. The later two regattas are notable for the excellent showing of other Swan 42’s entered in the events. In the MBYC Fall Series, Barleycorn placed 3rd while Daring posted a 4th place finish. In the highly competitive IRC East Coast Championship, Amelia, Bandit and Tiburon each performed well with 2nd, 3rd and 7th place finishes, respectively.
The 2008 season is getting off to a great start. The Swan 42 fleet will consist of 12 boats for our first one-design start at Key West Race Week. Not bad for a fleet that was represented by only one boat a year ago! The fleet will consist of 9 boats that have already experienced the thrill of competing in this exciting new one-design class: Mutiny, Impetuous, Bandit, Uxorious III, Arethusa, Amelia, Tiburon, Interlodge, and Hoss. We look forward in Key West to welcoming to the fleet Ken Colburn and the crew of Apparition, Barry Sampson and his crew (boat name TBD), and Jon Halbert and his crew aboard Vitesse. The Swan 42 fleet will be taking center stage in at this premiere event. Regardless of the overall finishes, this will be an event not to miss!!
I encourage all owners to visit the website and review the 2008 calendar for racing in both the Americas and European circuits. If 2007 was any indication, things are only getting better. Stay tuned – there is MUCH more to come!
